Lakshman Jhula is a renowned hanging bridge across the holy river Ganga. It connects two villages in Rishikesh: Tapovan village in Tehri Garhwal and Jonk village in Pauri Garhwal, made of iron and spanning 450 feet over 70 feet above the river.
The bridge has been a popular tourist attraction since it was constructed due to its association with Hindu Mythology – in Ramayan, it's believed Lord Ram and his brother Lakshman crossed the Ganga at the same spot.

Although Lakshman Jhula can be travelled at any time of the year, the best time to visit Lakshman Jhula is from October to April. During this time, the weather is pleasant and cool, making it ideal for outdoor activities and sightseeing. The monsoon season from July to September can cause the Ganges River to swell and the bridge to become slippery, so it's best to avoid visiting during that time. Rishikesh's Lakshman Jhula history
Lakshman Jhula holds a special place in Hindu Mythology - Lord Ram and Lakshman crossed the mighty river Ganga at this point, using just two ropes. This feat of courage and bravery was so remarkable that a bridge was built to honor it - which happened to be 284 feet long and suspended. It served as the main connection between villages until 1889, when a flood destroyed it.
The original jute bridge was replaced by an iron one in 1939, situated right where it used to stand; therefore its name remained the same. Nowadays, it remains one of the major tourist attractions in Rishikesh, although its use has been suspended since 12th July 2019 due to safety concerns. The 96-year-old bridge is no longer capable of supporting the load of current traffic, so another bridge has been erected alongside it, leaving Lakshman Jhula as merely a tourist attraction.
